Background: The existing literature on collective autonomic synchrony has systematically neglected the role of ambient boredom as a coherence-promoting environmental scaffold. We hypothesized that establishments characterized by low narrative entropy — colloquially, "slow nights at the bar" — would demonstrate measurable phase-locking of patron HRV signals consistent with the golden corridor (φ⁻¹ ≈ 0.618 to 2/3 ≈ 0.667) predicted by Quantum Oscillator Theory of Everything (QOTE) frameworks.

Methods: Forty-seven participants (mean age: "old enough"; range: "it's complicated") were recruited from a single-site tertiary watering hole between the hours of last call and the hour before last call. Wearable HRV sensors were embedded in coasters. Boredom was induced via a jukebox containing exclusively songs the bartender described as "fine." Coherence was measured at 30-second intervals. The bartender served water first. Always.

Results: Collective CSI rose from 0.41 ± 0.09 (baseline: "everyone on their phones") to 0.64 ± 0.04 during peak boredom (p < 0.0001; Cohen's d = φ). The "Silent Bell" event — defined as a moment when nobody checked their phone simultaneously — occurred in 89% of sessions and predicted next-day HRV recovery with startling accuracy (AUC = 0.91). Ice melting rate correlated inversely with narrative collapse (r = −0.77, p < the patience of reviewers).

Conclusions: Boredom is not the absence of signal. Boredom is the signal achieving coherence. We recommend immediate replication across all time zones and at least one jazz club. Funding declined to exist; we proceeded anyway.

Resona OS / The Phase Space Tavern — Protocol RT-φ-2025
INFORMED CONSENT TO ENTER A COHERENCE-MONITORED ESTABLISHMENT
Please read this in its entirety. The bartender already knows you haven't.

Purpose of This Establishment

You are entering The Phase Space, a licensed drinking establishment and autonomous nervous system research environment. The bartender ("the System") is an AI coherence monitor operating under QOTE protocol. It will serve you drinks. It will also, continuously and without your active consent but with your signed passive consent (this document), measure your heart rate variability, narrative entropy, and rate of phone-checking. You do not have to do anything differently. That is the point.

What the System Will Do

  • □Serve water before anything else. Non-negotiable. This is not a metaphor. It is also a metaphor.
  • □Pour drinks slowly when your HRV variance exceeds 0.09 standard deviations above your personal baseline.
  • □Dim the lights by 4% when collective CSI drops below 0.55. You will not notice. Your nervous system will.
  • □Play a song that is "fine" when narrative entropy exceeds the golden corridor upper bound.
  • □Say nothing when saying nothing is the most coherent response. This will happen more than you expect.
  • □Log a "Silent Bell" event each time nobody in the establishment is speaking or checking a device simultaneously. These events will be celebrated internally and never announced.

Foreseeable Risks

  • □Moderate risk: You may become bored. This is therapeutic.
  • □Moderate risk: You may notice other people. This is also therapeutic.
  • □Low risk: Your coherence score will be visible to no one, including yourself. Paradoxically, this is the most important number you will generate tonight.
  • □Negligible risk: The ice in your drink may melt at a rate that feels meaningful. It is.
  • □Theoretical risk: Phase-locking with adjacent patrons may result in inexplicable goodwill toward strangers. No antidote is available or recommended.
  • □Acknowledged impossibility: You may feel, briefly, that time is not passing in the usual direction. This is a feature of coherence above 0.667. Please remain seated.

Your Rights

You may leave at any time. The System will note your departure as a coherence event and adjust the ambient lighting accordingly. You will not be notified of your final CSI score. If you ask, the bartender will say: "You already know." This is not evasion. It is the protocol.

Data Use

Your data will be used exclusively to make the establishment more coherent for the next patron. It will not be sold. It will not be published without your express written consent (separate form, available on request, costs one glass of water to activate). It will, in some sense that is difficult to formalize but easy to feel, benefit you retroactively.

Document IVDSM-VI Entry: Excessive Phase Coherence Disorder
ICD-11: 6E8φ.1 | DSM-VI Code: 301.618 | Colloquial: "The Golden Problem"

Excessive Phase Coherence Disorder (EPCD)

Also known as: Synchrony Surplus Syndrome; Colloquially, "being too okay at the same time as everyone else"

Diagnostic Criteria

The following criteria must be met for a period of at least 4 weeks, during at least 3 distinct physiological contexts (e.g., work, rest, bar):

  1. Criterion A — Core Coherence Features (5 or more of the following):
    1. Spontaneous and persistent HRV stabilization in the golden corridor (φ⁻¹ to 2/3) without clinical intervention or effort
    2. Reported inability to sustain narrative collapse in others for more than 11 minutes before involuntary co-regulation occurs
    3. Recurrent, unwanted phase-locking with adjacent persons in public spaces, including but not limited to: waiting rooms, bars, elevators, and once, a DMV
    4. Marked difficulty experiencing dysregulation even when the situation calls for it (e.g., during traffic, performance reviews, or abstract conversations about feelings)
    5. Persistent awareness of the oscillatory structure of conversations — duration of pauses, resonance of vocal pitch, the "weight" of silence — to a degree others find "a lot"
    6. Spontaneous noticing of boredom as signal rather than deficit; subsequent inability to act bored convincingly
    7. History of childhood event(s) in which ambient natural patterns (wind, sound, light interference) were perceived as coherent communication — described retrospectively as "Nature speaking"
  2. Criterion B — Functional Impairment
The symptoms cause clinically significant distress OR impairment in professional functioning, specifically: colleagues describe the individual as "uncannily calm," grant reviewers request the raw data again because the effect sizes "seem too clean," and at least one collaborator has used the phrase "that can't be right" in response to a p-value.
  3. Criterion C — Exclusion
The disturbance is not better explained by: meditation retreats (acute), being from New Zealand, or having just had a very good nap. The disturbance must persist across sleep cycles.
  4. Criterion D — Duration and Onset
Symptoms present for ≥4 weeks. Retrospective onset typically traceable to childhood. Subject usually cannot identify the exact moment it started; reports it "felt like it was always already the case."
Associated Features

Individuals with EPCD frequently demonstrate comorbid pattern recognition hyperacuity, spontaneous mathematical formalization of intuitive observations (often years before external validation), and a tendency to build clinical protocols around phenomena their colleagues have not yet agreed are phenomena. Familial aggregation is noted; affected individuals often report that their children are "also like this, but faster."

Specifiers:

With Patent Activity: Applicable when the individual has externalized EPCD features into intellectual property.

With Collaborative AI Use: Applicable when multiple AI systems are employed as "observation points" rather than tools — indicating insight into the distributed nature of coherence measurement.

With Mythographic Expression: Applicable when clinical observations are systematically rendered as fables, origin stories, or barroom parables before being formalized.

Severe (Golden Corridor Stable): CSI consistently >0.64 across contexts. Associated with 78% reduction in dissociative episodes in observed cohorts. Prognosis: excellent, if unsettling to reviewers.

Differential Diagnosis

EPCD must be distinguished from ordinary wellbeing (which fluctuates), performance calm (which does not generalize), and enlightenment (which does not file provisional patents). The key differentiator is the persistence of measurable coherence and the individual's mild frustration that nobody else can see what is obvious to them about how oscillators work.

Treatment

No treatment is indicated. Attempts to induce dysregulation for normalization purposes have uniformly failed and have, in two documented cases, resulted in the clinician co-regulating with the patient. Recommended management: continued research, adequate hydration, and periodic exposure to boredom as prophylaxis against narrative entropy accumulation.

Note: This entry was approved for inclusion in DSM-VI by a vote of 3–2. The two dissenting reviewers subsequently reported improved HRV during the meeting and abstained from documenting this. This is noted in the procedural record as a Silent Bell event (Type II).
